Why is gutter clearing important? Gutter clearing helps protect your property and prevent costly water damage.

In my experience I find that regular gutter clearing is often overlooked. People don’t realise the importance of having their gutters cleared until usually there's a problem such as leaking gutters, water damage or mould in their properties. If your home or commercial property have become dirty and full of organic debris, it’s only a matter of time before your building can suffer from things like a leaky roof or water damage.

Gutters are especially designed to collect rain water from your roof and flow straight into the drainage system. So you might be thinking how do they end up getting blocked? The most common way your gutters become blocked is by moss that has fallen from your roof and into your gutters or, leaves/pine needles that have fallen from trees in the nearby area. This causes them to block and start to cause problems especially if they’ve been left neglected for some time. Regular gutter clearing is essential and in this blog we will explain why gutter cleaning is important, how often it should be done and the potential risks when left neglected.

Why is gutter clearing so important?

Gutter clearing not only collects water but they collect twigs, moss, dirt, pine needles, leaves and I’ve even come across objects like tennis balls blocking the downpipes!

Over time these debris I’ve just mentioned build up causing blockages that prevent the water flowing freely.

When gutters haven’t been cleared routinely my top 3 most common issues I come across is:

  1. Water damage – blocked gutters can overflow allowing the water to soak into your walls, plaster boards, roofs and foundations. This can lead to damp, mould and structural damage which can be costly to repair. The water can back up into the roof causing leaks and rot.
  2. Pest infestations – gutter filled with debris are a great environment for pests like birds, rodents, insects to nest creating an unhygienic and other problems for your property
  3. Structural damage – The weight off the debris especially when wet cause the gutters and soffits to sag, pull away from the structure of even collapse.

How often should I have my gutters cleared?

I would recommend having your gutters cleared every 6 months. Ideally in Spring and Autum. Some factors may need more regular cleaning depending on proximity to tress and roof conditions. We even maintain gutter clearing at some block apartments 4 times per year.

If you haven't had your gutters cleared within the last 6 months please call us on 01202 923008 and we will happily help.
